Houston, April 9, 1998. Here's where these animations show their value. Watch north of Houston as a strong thin line developes. Looks like hawks right?, but it moves south in a wave and gets thicker. I don't think this is birds. I checked the radar and satellite during this event and they showed nothing.
Lake Charles April 8, 1998 Trans Gulf Migrants? Watch dur south of High Island, Texas at 1942z. Two reflections appear. In the next three frames they move Northeast. I estimate the speed of this feature as about 22 MPH. I know thunderstorms can move like this, but I feel like this is a good candidate for Trans Gulf migrants on NEXRAD.
Houston, April 8, 1998 Watch over south Jefferson County. There is a very strong feature heading into Louisiana. It is most pronouced in frame 1944z and continues at least until frame 2043z. A spoke with Frank Peace on the telephone during this event and he speculated that this might be swallows. If so I'll add that going by the UTC checklist Tree Swallows would be a good guess.
Corpus Christi April 7, 1998 Watch over Bee County at 1530z, a dark red streak appears. By 1706z it has moved over DeWitt and Lavaca counties and looks like as many as four large flights. The larges streaches into Warton County. By 1735z its almost to Fort Bend County.
Houston April 7, 1998 At 1713z the large flight from the Corpus Christi Radar can be seen moving into Warton County. Starting at 1812z a strong dark red signal has developed over Smith Point Pennisula in Chamber's County. This strong signal continues until at 2039z. Also in frame 2039z look at the long thin dark red features in the northwest field of view.
Corpus Chrsiti April 6, 1998 there are two very interesting features here. On the 1802z frame look just south of Calhoun County over the Gulf. A wave of someting appears and move over land over the next two frames them disappears. In the 1930 frame a line appears over La Salle and Zavalla Counties. By the 2108 frame its has elongated and move rapidly over Karnes and Dewitt Counties. I wish I had more frames for this period.
Corpus Chrsisti March 26, 1998 Look over Dimmit County in the 1534z frame. A couple of high reflectivity blobs appear and move north pretty fast over the next 3 frames disappearing at 1831z over Medina County.
Houston March 26, 1998 Look south of Jefferson County in the 1717z frame. A very high reflectivity (+28dbz) formation appears and moves over Southwest Louisiana in the 1944z frame. Also note the long 16dbz formation moving over the Bolivar Penninsula at the same time. John Whittle reported large numbers of Shorebirds there an that afternoon.
