A medium sized tern between a Forster's and Royal Tern in size. Black legs and feet. Black crown and ragged crest. The tail is deeply forked and short. the long slim black bill tipped with yellow is distinctive. The yellow tip can be hard to see at a distance or in bright light on a light background.
Sandwich Terms may be in winter plumage by July. Winter birds have a white forehead and the crest becomes smooth.
Look for Sandwich Terns on beaches at Bolivar Flats, Galveston Island State Park, San Luis Pass, and Christmas Bay State Park.
