Great Crested Flycatcher

Last updated 4/14/96

Great-crested Flycatcher is the only breeding Myiarchus flycatcher on the UTC. During migration and the summer this is the most likely Myiarchus flycatcher on the UTC (rare winter birds are more likley to be Ash-throated Flycatcher).

Great-crested show more contrast than other flycatchers in the same genus; more yellow, deeper gray, darker brown. A bushy crest is often visable. Its a common summer resident in open woodland, often feeding high in the canopy.

Look for Great-crested Flycatcher during migration at Anahauc NWR, Sabine Woods, Brazoria NWR, San Bernard NWR, and High Island. Breeding birds can be found at Brazoria NWR, San Bernard NWR, Brazos Bend State Park, and High Island.
